Los Angeles, California, July 31, 1955.

Gene Krupa, Lionel Hampton and Teddy Wilson were old friends by the time this 1955 record date took place. They had started working together under the wing of Benny Goodman in 1936, when the celebrated quartet (preceded by the trio minus Hampton) was formed. Following 1938, however, not a single recording seems to exist featuring Krupa, Wilson and Hampton together until our 1955 session, which appears here in its entirety and for the first time ever on CD. After this session, which took place after the filming of The Benny Goodman Story (the LP was advertised after the movie), there would be sporadic reunions of the quartet with Benny Goodman. The 1955 session stands alone as the only recording ever made featuring Krupa, Wilson and Hampton together WITHOUT Goodman. Although Benny Goodman is absent from our 1955 session, it is still a quartet performance, as bassist Red Callender joins Krupa, Wilson and Hampton for the date. It was originally issued both on LP (presenting the six initial tracks of our CD) and EP (which contained the last two tracks). Both editions are extremely difficult to find, and it’s a real pleasure to be able to listen to this wonderful swinging music again.
