The Roach-Brown quintet began its tragically short run at the onset of 1954.
However, this fantastic, yet ill-fated formation came to a tragic end when in the
early morning hours of June 26, 1956, the 25-year-old Clifford Brown died in
a car accident along with Richie Powell and the pianist’s wife. This volume
includes the complete original album Clifford Brown & Max Roach, the first out
of three LPs released by this incarnation of the quintet with Harold Land on
tenor sax (the other two albums, which compiled other tunes recorded during
these same sessions, were Brown & Roach Inc. and Study in Brown).
All of the music contained here is regarded as true jazz milestones, not only
for the amazing trumpet playing, but also for the overwhelming interaction and
understanding between Brownie and Roach, and between all of the members
of the band as a whole. The material includes original versions of some of
Brownie’s best compositions, like “Joy Spring” and “Daahoud”, as well as
memorable readings of pianist Duke Jordan’s “Jordu” and Bud Powell’s beautiful
composition “Parisian Thoroughfare”. No matter how many times an attentive
listener sits down to this exquisite music, they will always find something that
they hadn’t heard before.
