COMPLETE 1960 EUROPEAN CONCERTS
Reference: DIS-124547
4 CD DE-LUXE BOXSET - 24 PAGE BOOKLET!
All known live recordings by the fabulous Quincy Jones Big Band during its 1960 European tour. By then, the orchestra included such stars as Clark Terry, Benny Bailey, Phil Woods, Sahib Shihab, Quentin Jackson, Jimmy Cleveland and Les Spann. Recorded with excellent sound quality, this is the first time that all of this music appears on a single collection.
Although Quincy Jones was only 27-years old when he made these recordings (he is currently 77 at this writing), he was already a veteran musician with a lot of experience under his belt. Although he had recorded a few sides under his own name in both Stockholm in 1953 and New York in 1955, Quincy Jones’ first full album as a leader was This Is How I Feel About Jazz, recorded in September 1956. This was followed by My Fair Lady Loves Jazz and Go West, Man (both from 1957) as well as a bunch of 1959 sessions which saw light on many different albums and formats. (These March- June 1959 sessions produced the studio recordings of the arrangements heard here of “The Midnight Sun Will Never Set”, “Moanin’”, “I Remember Clifford”, “The Gypsy”, “Whisper Not”, “Tickle Toe”, and “Birth of a Band”.) Half of the tunes here appeared on the original album The Birth of a Band, while almost all of the remaining tunes appeared a bit later on the sequel The Birth of a Band Volume 2, which had the same cover but in yellow instead of red. Due to the difficulties of maintaining a big band that Jones stated above, his big band featuring such superlative personnel couldn’t remain together long. Fortunately, the band was recorded. Besides the aforementioned 1959 sessions, it produced a couple of studio albums, beginning with the November 1959 LP The Great Wide World of Quincy Jones. Some of the many live concerts performed by the band in 1960 were also recorded, and all of them appear on this set, which contains every known live recording by this splendid band.
