This CD is one of Bucky Pizzarelli's finest sets. First Pizzarelli and fellow guitarists Artie Ryerson, Barry Galbraith, Allen Hanlon and Howie Collins (Tony Mottola subs on a few numbers) team up to perform Bill Challis' arrangements of five Bix Beiderbecke compositions: "Davenport Blues," "Candlelights," "Flashes," "In the Dark" and "In a Mist." These exquisite arrangements show off the beauty of the guitarists' tones, while showcasing Bix's pieces (four of which were originally piano solos) in a new light. The flip side of the record finds Bucky and his 16-year-old daughter Mary Pizzarelli performing a series of guitar duets of obscure 1930s pieces by either Carl Kress (including the three-part "After Thoughts") or the team of Kress and Dick McDonough. Fascinating music.
Recorded at Media Sound, Feb. 4-5 and Mar. 28, 1974.
