The first version of the classic Monk Quartet formula of which tenorist Charlie Rouse was the essential ingredient came into being at the time of Monk’s now legendary Town Hall concert in NY in Feb. 1959. Sam Jones and Art Taylor were the rhythm players in the Orchestral segment of the event.
