The legendary Eddie “Guitar Slim” Jones was a passionate R&B singer and an absolutely brilliant guitar player whose 1950s sides still crackle with a ragged intensity over fifty years after they were recorded. Nearly all rhythm & blues artists hailing from Texas, Louisiana or Mississippi cite him as one of their principal influences. Slim’s singing was as fiery as his guitar work, and his gospel-like passion was perfectly matched by the loose-limbed feel of his magnificent band, sometimes including Ray Charles on piano and tenor saxophonist Joe Tillman.

This quintessential release contains 28 remastered tracks from Guitar Slim’s most inspired years, gathering a variety of the great sides he recorded for the Specialty label and Atlantic’s subsidiary, Atco Records, between 1953 and 1958. Some of the material here isn’t available in other collections, nor have these recordings ever been previously compiled together on the same CD. These fabulous songs are true snapshots of that period, when rhythm & blues was on the cusp of changing into rock & roll, or electric blues with hints of gospel music. Explosive classics like “The Things That I Used to Do”, “Oh Yeah!”, “Sufferin’ Mind”, and “Quicksand”, are all examples of Slim’s distortion-ridden guitar tone that predated Jimi Hendrix and the great blues and rock lead guitar players of the 1960s.
