This release presents the complete original LP "Mr. Jelly Lord" (Riverside RLP 12-132). A brilliant New Orleans pianist, Ferdinand Joseph “Jelly Roll” Morton (1890-1941) is also generally acknowledged as the first jazz composer. In 1938, while he was living in relative obscurity in Washington (playing at a small bar to earn his keep), folklorist Alan Lomax invited him to record what ended up being nine hours of piano performances and interviews for the Library of Congress Music Division’s Archive of American Folk Song. The Riverside LP presented here compiles the musical highlights from that collection. To the tracks on that album, six additional performances from the same sessions have been included.
JERRY ROLL MORTON, piano & vocals
