Woody Herman tradition to use a saxophone section as centerpiece when he launched his new band in 1947 is continued here by one of the warmest-sounding traditionalist of today. Harry Allen carries the torch for the swing and bebop eras nowadays. He has a deep appreciation ofthe late 1940’s and 50’s where jazz bands werecomprised of individual stylists who doubled as team players.
Tenor saxophonists Grant Stewart and Eric Alexander plus baritone saxophonist Gary Smulyan are among the finest soloists and sight-readers around and share Harry’s passion for the seductive sound of a sax section. They are backed here by pianist Rossano Sportiello, bassist Joel Forbes and drummer Kevin Kanner.
A very beautiful and fitting tribute album on the tradition of recent releases like Count Basie’s Live at The Crescendo, Thad Jones/ Mel Lewis All My Yesterdays and Quincy Jones’ Live in Ludwigshafen 1961 which we have just recently presented to all of you.
Recorded at Trading 8s Studio, Paramus, New Jersey, Agust 19 & 20, 2015.
