Portrait of Sheila was one of the only two vocal jazz albums that the Blue Note label ever recorded during Alfred Lion's reign. The Penguin Guide to Jazz selected the album as part of its "Core Collection" and gave it a rating of four stars (of a possible four). Allmusic gave the album a rating of five stars, stating "Jordan sounds quite distinctive, cool-toned, and adventurous during her classic date... highly recommended". The quartet includes Steve Swallow , Barry Galbraith. & Denzil Best
