These outstanding live sets from a series of dates at Yoshi's - San Francisco's venerated jazz club - in 2003 are every bit as enjoyable musically as they are benefiting from outstanding engineering throughout.

BEN WEBSTER Meets PIET NOORDIJK
"JOHNNY COME LATELY"

IMPRESSIVE BEN WEBSTER ON A NEVER BEFORE RELEASED QUINTET PERFORMANCE!!!!

Dutch label Nederlands Jazz Archief has just presented a new CD containing a previously unissued complete club set by the immortal Ben Webster recorded live at De Koffer, Groningen, on February 2, 1973, that is, shortly before the saxophonist's death, which would take place on September 20 of that year.

While Webster was very ill in his last months, his playing never truly decayed, as is evident both in the recently reissued December 1972 concert set with Oscar Peterson and in this new album, on which he is backed by Dutch alto saxophonist Piet Noordijk (who died in 2011, these are his only existing recordings with Webster), pianist Irv Rochlin, bassist Rob Langereis, and drummer Tony Inzalaco. Inzalaco had also been the drummer for the aforementioned concert with Oscar Peterson.

According to the set's liner notes, "Ben Webster was in bad shape during his final years. He was fat, short of breath and drank more than was good for him. That this night turned out differently was probably thanks to the unexpected collaboration of hyper-energetic alto sax player Piet Noordijk. Webster got carried away by Noordijk and his blowing was more vigorous and inspired than was usual in his declining years."

The program offers no surprises for the Webster fan. It begins with the ubiquitous Ellington classics "Sophisticated Lady" and "Johnny Come Lately", the second, in fact, a Billy Strayhorn composition (Webster had been present on the original recordings of both of these tunes in the 1940s). The set also contains the ever present blues performance, and swing perennials "Sweet Georgia Brown" (first recorded by Webster in 1943) and "Just You, Just Me" (Webster didn't perform this song too often, and this is one of just three extant versions by him). Ballad time is filled with a version of "Old Folks", a song of which the tenor saxophonist was highly fond of, and which he had chosen to play in 1970 on a TV set, after being told of the death of his friend Johnny Hodges. This is another moving performance of the tune. The set ends with a reading of Miles Davis' "The Theme" in a spirited performance that rounds up a fine and previously unheard night by a true jazz giant.

The CD is accompanied by a nice 20-page booklet including both Dutch and English liner notes, as well as rarely seen photos and memorabilia.

SHIRLEY HORN
LIVE AT THE 4 QUEENS
Shirley Horn performing live, unaltered and in the moment!

This CD marks the release of a sparkling 1988 set by Shirley Horn, the angora-voiced jazz singer and pianist. Horn had spent three decades as a cult artist known mainly in her hometown of Washington, D.C.; now, at 54, she was on a somewhat reluctant road to international fame. Verve Records had recently signed her and released her highest-profile album to date, I Thought About You: Live from Vine Street. It introduced thousands of jazz fans to an artist whom Miles Davis had long adored.

Horn’s piano chops placed her among the best in her field, but it was her singing that first caught the ear, notably her penchant for confiding ballads at the slowest imaginable tempos.

The surprise of this live set, however, is its freewheeling abandon. In a no-pressure bar setting, with low-level chit-chat audible throughout, Horn is clearly having a ball. Vocally she lets loose, improvising as she does on no other record. Her playing is at its strongest; ideas pour from her in chorus after chorus. She and her longtime bandmates, bassist Charles Ables and drummer Steve Williams, share a synchronicity to rival almost any jazz trio’s.

Another superb release from Resonance Records the label (and its producer) with a mission!

ETHAN IVERSON – RON CARTER – NASHEET WAITS
THE PURITY OF THE TURF

Ethan Iverson has listened to Ron Carter as long as he’s been listening to jazz. He has written about Carter frequently on his well-respected jazz blog Do the Math and is quoted several times in Carter’s biography Find The Right Notes.

This is a collaboration between two of the most innovative and contemporary musicians in jazz and one of the music's most prolific and traditional bassists. Nasheet Waits is, perhaps, the common ground where Ethan Iverson and Ron Carter meet and the trio gets its solid and round sound, because he represents the avant-garde as well as swing.

Beyond being a refreshing collaboration of jazz musicians from different eras, this album’s performance is the work of three superb musicians delivering an hour of exciting and accessible music. Criss Cross Jazz records are always a level playing field, with everyone recording in the same studio in a single day, hence the sporting title, 'The Purity of the Turf. '

The repertoire is mostly originals and jazz classics. Highlights are a great Horace Silver’s 'Song For My Father' and a surprising solo piano tribute to the late Paul Bley in Anette Peacock’s "So Hard it Hurts".

MAP TRIO
MEZQUIDA – AURIGNAC – PRATS

MAP’s first album is a breath of fresh air in the Spanish vanguard scene; a serious and intelligent project in the hands of three young and highly promising musicians with quite some experience on their shoulders already.

The imaginative and original Ernesto Aurignac on alto sax, the greatly expressive pianist Marco Mezquida and the inventive and versatile beat of Ramon Prats on drums make for a solid and levelled trio with a lot to offer.

Touching on free jazz, popular contemporary music and free improvisation, MPA trio sounds like jazz in the wisest sense, captivating and immediate.
This band is an unimagined reality in the Spanish Jazz scene.

LOUIS ARMSTRONG & HIS ALL STARS
LIVE IN STUTTGART 1959 (CD+DVD Edition)

Available for the first time ever!

This remarkable release presents a concert given by the great Louis Armstrong on February 15, 1959 at the Liederhalle in Stuttgart, Germany. Although portions of this wonderful performance have been circulating on YouTube in low quality, this is the first time that both the complete concert (in audio) and all existing filmed segments from the show (on the DVD) are presented on disc, both taken from the original tapes and, thus, in excellent sound and image quality.

It was a true delight to watch Satchmo in action at the beginning of 1959. It must be noted that shortly after during the same European tour, in June, he suffered a heart attack in Spoleto, Italy, which although in no way diminished his musical capacities – he had yet to offer such gems as his LP with Duke Ellington – did force him to slow down and limit the energy put into each concert.

On this performance you can enjoy Louis at his best, performing some of his perennial classics, but also some lesser known masterpieces, such as “I Get Ideas”, the arrangement made for him of the tango “Adiós muchachos”, which he had heard during his 1955 South American tour and which, for a short period, entered his concert repertoire.

THE FRED HERSCH TRIO
SUNDAY NIGHT AT THE VANGUARD

This album is all about capturing lightning in a bottle. To seize the improvising sound when everything goes well is something very rare but almost impossible to get in a studio. The interplay, the improvisation, the sound…. In short, this is an effervescent set by one of the jazz world's top piano trios at the top of their game. Everyone is ‘in the zone’ and stays there for the entire set.

Hersch's output has been consistently excellent, but sometimes, as on this special Sunday Night, the stars align. The trio, from the opening notes of "The Cockeyed Optimist," is locked into and to a telepathic interplay zone, playful and eloquent, elegant and assured all the way through.

The pianist’s relationship with the Vanguard dates back to the late 1970s, and the unique energy and sense of adventure which that crepuscular room engenders in the trio is palpable from the first note. The Village Vanguard, the Carnegie Hall of jazz clubs, with its almost magical acoustics (one of the best clubs in the world to play with a piano trio) allows musicians to play a wide range in which even whisper-soft notes still fill the entire room.

There is no doubt that the hallowed New York basement is as much a character in this sublime performance as Fred Hersch’s long-standing partners, bassist John Hébert and drummer Eric McPherson.

This is as good as it gets!
