FROM THE LINER NOTES:
While most of the albums in the last period of his career
were with his working group (featuring his brother Nat;
the two brothers would play and record together until
Cannonball’s sudden death on August 8, 1975),
Cannonball Adderley and the Poll Winners features the
saxophonist in an unusual context, sharing the frontline
with guitarist Wes Montgomery. One of the most revered
guitarists in jazz history, Wes Montgomery (1925-1968)
was just beginning his career as a well-known soloist
when he recorded this album with Julian “Cannonball”
Adderley. Originally issued under Cannonball’s name
(but with both Wes Montgomery and Ray Brown
mentioned on the cover), Cannonball Adderley and the
Poll Winners was one of countless albums that used
awards garnered by the participating musicians as a
promotional tool. Apart from their wonderful chemistry
here, Wes and Cannonball would only be recorded
together on one other occasion, for one of the three
sessions made for singer John Hendricks’ album A Good
Git-Together. The complete session, along with the only
existing alternate take of our main album (on Charlie
Parker’s “Au Privave”) have been added to our release,
in order to present the complete recorded collaborations
of these two musical giants.
