In 1950, Mahalia Jackson became the first gospel singer to perform at New York’s Carnegie Hall when Joe Bostic produced the “Negro Gospel and Religious Music Festival”. She started touring Europe in 1952 and was hailed by critics as the “world’s greatest gospel singer”. In 1954 Columbia Records used that phrase to title her debut LP for the label: "The World’s Greatest Gospel Singer" (Columbia CL644), on which Mahalia is backed by a small group led by her longtime companion, pianist Mildred Falls. The 1960 LP "The Power and the Glory" (Columbia CL 1473), which presents the singer backed by the famous Percy Faith orchestra, has been added here as a bonus in its entirety.
