2- CD SET

Continuing with its epic Treasury Show collection, Storyville Records presents a new 2-CD set which contains five rarely heard complete 1953 radio broadcasts (four from the Blue Note, in Chicago, a further one from the Bandbox in New York), plus a 1944 program from the Hurricane, in New York. While some of the songs heard are, as usual, well known standards from the Ellington songbook (such as the theme "Take the 'A' Train", "C Jam Blues", "Creole Love Call" or "Satin Doll"), the shows also include rarely heard original Ellington songs such as "It's a Sin", "Moonlight Fiesta", and "Blue Hean Beguine", which didn't last long in the orchestra's repertoire, or Billy Strayhorn's "Boo-Dah".  The Hurricane show also presents Ellington's only existing recording of the Harry Warren-Mack Gordon song "My Heart Tells Me".

Sound quality is very good considering the age of the recordings, and the playing all throughout is consistent with the always brilliant standards of the Ellington band, which features such soloists as Clark Terry, Paul Gonsalves, Johnny Hodges, and the Duke himself at the piano.
