‘Fly or Die Fly or Die Fly or Die ((world war))’ is the final album by Jaimie Branch, following on from ‘Fly or Die’ (2017) and ‘Fly or Die II: Bird Dogs of Paradise’ (2019). Fly or Die was the name of Branch’s quartet, and the defiant mantra now feels all the more poignant after the trumpeter’s untimely death in 2022. Finished just a month before her passing, this LP now acts as a pure celebration of Branch’s innovation in 21st century jazz improvisation and composition. Fiercely political, flickering between rage and tenderness, it is a perfect encapsulation of her talents and worldview.
