Singer, composer and transgender activist Beverly Glenn-Copeland has been defying genres and swerving categorisation for over fifty years of joyful creativity. Originally released in 2004 under the pseudonym Phynix, which Glenn-Copeland adopted after recovering from an illness that almost took his life, ‘Primal Prayer’ is all about rejuvenation, in both body and faith. Tracks like ‘Back To Bachland’ and ‘In The Image’ shift effortlessly from choral to gospel to graceful disco, resulting in something that has as much in common with Massive Attack as it does his fellow Philadelphians Sister Sledge or Barbara Mason.
