John Coltrane was not motivated by stylistic consistencies or stereotypes of self-expression. The essence of his creativity was curiosity and actualization – acts of motivic or intervallic transformation became metaphors of transcendence, and excursions into unspecified regions, via vamps, extended modes, or loose harmonic strictures, were escapes from the labyrinth. His self-imposed odyssey required continuously new vistas, provided no direction home. Art Lange
