Data sheet
The remarkably prolific David Murray has released albums on dozens of record companies since his debut LP, 1976’s Flowers for Albert, and he’s still bouncing from label to label. Recently Murray teamed up with J.M.I., a young NYC-based outfit that solely uses analog technology in the studio
Recorded and mixed directly to a Studer A80, Sun/Moon consists of solo performances on tenor saxophone and bass clarinet. The sound is immediate and holographic, capturing the essence of both instruments down to the tiniest details—like the popping sounds Murray creates by tapping the keys on the bass clarinet, for example. The eight songs on Sun/Moon offers a wide mix of styles. Both interpretations of “Siriana Prometheus” are bouncy and infectious, “Lovers” is a gorgeous ballad, and “Cloud Collapse” proves that Murray can still play with the same fire we heard when he was a young lion.
