A native of Skien, Norway but now US based, guitarist and composer Lage Lund’s latest album, Ashes is a trio offering. It’s his eleventh record as leader and follows his 2020 album, Life Of The Party. Five of his previous recordings have been issued by the Criss Cross label with a further quartet album, Most Peculiar.

Founder Gerry Teekins once said, ‘if you have a great band, but not a great drummer, forget it’. This advice has been heeded by Lund in the choice of drummer for Ashes, Tyshawn Sorey is a key element to the success of the record.

Sorey describes himself as a ‘musical shape shifter’ and has critiqued notions that improvisation and composition are mutually exclusive. His ability and desire to move seamlessly between different musical models from moment to moment adds a vital spark to the music. The addition of bassist, educator and Whirlwind recording artist Matt Brewer makes for a watertight rhythm section.
