Recorded live in New Jersey on April 15, 1969.
With Woody Shaw, Blakey, Carlos Garnett on tenor sax, George Cables on piano, and Scotty Holt on bass.
There is the only Blakey's appareance on record in 1969. Also it is the second time George Cables appears on an album after a obscure saxophonist Paul Jeffreys date for Savoy during the previous summer. In September 1970, Cables and Shaw became essential members of the Joe Henderson Quintet that recorded two legendary albums at Hermosa Beach's Lighthouse Cafe, "If you're not part of the solution,..." and "In pursuit of Blackness". The bassist Scotty Holt and Shaw have been jazzmates on the 1967 Jackie McLean Blue Note albums with pianist Lamont Johnson.

*****
"Shaw is marvelous on this date, blowing fire over Blakey’s volcanic drumming. An essential recording for any serious jazz collector." - Tom Maynard, The San Francisco Chronicle
