Lennie Tristano (1919-1978) was widely recognized as a prime influence on modern jazz. Blind since infancy, he developed a very personal piano style which introduced new voicings to jazz and combined classical and jazz music structures. This DVD compiles all of his known filmed appearances for the first time ever on a single release. (We hope that more footage is hidden away in unknown vaults and will surface one day!) Our DVD begins with Tristano's superb solo performance in Copenhagen. This is followed by an extremely rare TV show, appearing here for the first time ever on DVD. It was filmed at the Half Note Club in New York and captures the atmosphere of Tristano's regular quintet with Lee Konitz and Warne Marsh playing live. We are fortunate to have this rare footage, considering the scarcity of Tristano's filmed appearances. As noted by announcer Dr. William Hamilton, from the National Council of Churches of Christ, this was indeed a religious program!! This document captures an important fragment of jazz history. Finally, this DVD closes with two tracks featuring Tristano at the celebrated Berlin Jazz Piano Workshop on October 30, 1965, which reunited some of the best jazz pianists ever on the same stand (as can be seen on the first of these tracks entitled "Blues"). The complete program from this concert can also be found in our series (IJ522). This concert was performed the day before the Copenhagen concert!
