The Gillespie and Koller sets were recorded live in Hamburg on March 9,1953, at a time when Charlie Parker was still around and Gillespie was playing splendidly (he is heard with Bill Graham on baritone sax, Wade Legge on piano, Lou Hackney on bass, and Al Jones on drums). There is no fooling around or singing here, and Diz plays amazing renditions of five tracks, including “Alone Together” and a superb “I Can't Get Started”. The second part of the LP offers four tracks by a quintet fronted by Austrian saxophonist Hans Koller on tenor and German trombonist Albert Mangelsdorff, and showcasing the also German Jutta Hipp on piano. A delicious set.
