This release presents the complete original albums "Jazz at the Plaza vols. 1 & 2" (Columbia C-32470 & C-32471), which contained the musical results of a party thrown by Columbia to celebrate the healthy state of their jazz division. As stated on the original liner notes by producer Irving Townsend: “It was a party. We taped it because we wanted to remember it, in case it never happened again.” The event brought together the talents of the Miles Davis Sextet (featuring John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley and Bill Evans), the Duke Ellington Orchestra (showcasing the singing of Jimmy Rushing on afew songs), and Billie Holiday, who performed two tracks.

As a bonus to this unique concert, two rare live broadcasts of the Miles Davis Sextet from the same period (at the end of CD 1) have been included , as well as additional live performances by the Ellington band taped in Paris shortly after the Plaza concert (closing CD 2).

All tracks recorded live at the Persian Room of the Plaza Hotel,
New York, Tuesday, September 9, 1958.
