This release contains Sonny Rollins’ legendary complete original LP "A Night at the Village Vanguard" (Blue Note LP 1581), which was the second album presenting the saxophonist in a pianoless trio format (following his celebrated initial trio recording Way Out West)..
Two sets were taped at the Vanguard, the first (afternoonset) featured accompaniment by Donald Bailey on bass, and Pete LaRoca on drums, while the second (evening set, comprising most of the tracks), boasted Wilbur Ware on bass and Elvin Jones on drums. Two rare live pianoless trio performances by Rollins from the same period have been added here as a bonus: a version of “I Want to Be Happy”taped at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival, and a reading of “St. Thomas” recorded in Sweden the following year.
Live at the Village Vanguard, New York, November 3, 1957.
