Solo piano of one of the best jazz pianists of all time

3***Penguin Guide.

Oakland, C.A., Autumn 1969.

“Here, the master is literally at home. Recorded in 1969 at his residence in Oakland, California, on his own piano, a wonderful sounding 1904 Steinway, Hines makes magic with such well-known fare as You Are Too Beautiful.
Annotator Stanley Dance describes the date as “quintessential Hines.” Amen! Indeed, it’s a small miracle. - Chuck Berg (Jazztime Magazine)

This interesting solo CD features the great pianist Earl Hines performing four of his lesser-known compositions ("Love at Night Is out of Sight," "Minor Nothing," "Moon Mare" and "The Cannery Walk") in addition to two standards and a vocal version of "It Happens to Be Me." For most pianists, this set would be one of the highpoints of their career but Hines recorded so many superb albums during the 1964-77 period that this fine date is only average for him. ~ Scott Yanow
