Recorded live at the Liederhalle Mozartsaal in Stuttgart on March 22, 1976, this album is a celebration. It is so because the great trumpet innovator Woody Shaw has always been in grave danger of being forgotten (in a similar way as Booker Little). Shaw’s greatest period came in the late 70s and this recording shows him going all out with such sublime fury you wonder if he was having the night of his life and backed up by three other killer players in their prime: drummer Louis Hayes, tenor saxophonist Junior Cook and pianist Ronnie Mathews. This is an essential album even taking into account that the liner notes are short on useful, exciting or extra information. Those intervals, those fearless leaps, and their associated adrenaline rushes, are worth it all.
