The original soundtrack suite for Louis Malle’s film "Ascenseur pour l’echafaud" was first issued by the small French label Fontana on a 10-inch LP bearing the movie’s title, which only appeared in France. This music was also issued in the United States years later, but by that time the 10-inch editions were obsolete and a 12-inch LP was prepared combining the film soundtrack suite with a previously unissued studio session by the Miles Davis group from around the same period. That edition was titled Jazz Track and appeared in the States on two LP issues which had the exact same contents and liner notes but different covers.

"Ascenseur pour l’echafaud" wasn’t the first film to use a jazz soundtrack or to feature jazz musicians. However, the novelty of films such as Louis Malle’s Ascenseur pour l’echafaud was the absolute integration of jazz music to a feature film whose story had nothing to do with jazz or even with music itself: the utilization of jazz music to emphasize the dramatic action and develop/support the film’s climax.
