"Tenor Madness" (Prestige 7047) contains the legendary spontaneous studio collaboration between two jazzmen who were most responsible for shaping the modern sound of the tenor sax: Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane. The fact that Rollins and Coltrane only recorded together once (the single title track) gives the meeting even more historical importance. The rest of the album is in a quartet format and showcases the brilliant interaction of Rollins with drummer Philly Joe Jones. Jones is also present on the quartet LP "Newk’s Time" (Blue Note BST-84001), presented here in its entirety as a bonus.
