Premiered in 1956, the perennial Broadway musical My Fair Lady was based on George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion, with book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe. The story is about Eliza Doolittle, a Cockney flower girl who takes speech lessons from professor Henry Higgins, a phoneticist, so that she may pass as a lady.

This release presents both the complete recording by the original London cast, which premiered the musical in England in 1958 and was recorded in Stereo, and the complete Broadway cast recording, which was taped in Mono in 1956 (the album spent15 weeks at #1 in the charts). The two recordings shared exactly the samepersonnel, with Rex Harrison and Julie Andrews in the lead roles. (Harrison would also star the 1964 film, in which Andrews was replaced by Audrey Hepburn.)

A 1956 recording of “The Embassy Waltz”, a Lerner-Loewe tune which wasn’t included on the Broadway cast recording but later appeared in the film version, has been added here as a bonus, along with eleven jazz versions of tunes from the play (vocals at the end of CD1,and instrumentals at the end of CD2).
