Known for his lively, blues-based playing and as one of the finest accompanists in jazz, pianist Wynton Kelly (1931-1971) garnered acclaim as part of Miles Davis’ 1959-61 band. After leaving Davis, Kelly played with his own trio, which recorded for several labels and toured the United States and internationally. However, his career did not develop much further, and he had difficulty finding enough work during his later years. Kelly, who was prone to epilepsy, died in a hotel room in Canada following a seizure, at the age of 39.

This set compiles two previously unreleased broadcasts recorded in Boston and featuring Kelly’s trios with Paul Chambers or Cecil McBee on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums. The great Roy Eldridge is added on trumpet on the last two tracks.
