During the early 1960s, the Tubby Hayes Quintet held a weekly residency at legendary jazz venue Ronnie Scott's. While the five-piece was split in August 1964, one of their spectacular performances still survives on tape, and is released here on LP for the first time. It features a performance of Hayes' composition "Modes & Blues" (modal and amphetamines, the combination of choice for many jazzmen during the period), split into two parts. It sees tenor saxophonist and occasional flautist Hayes trading extended, improvised solos with trumpeter Jimmy Deuchar, over the thrilling modal jazz grooves provided by the band's acclaimed rhythm section. In other words, it's a previously hidden British jazz classic.
