WaxTime Records has dug deep in the vaults to compile 18 seminal Wilson Pickett recordings cut between 1959 and 1962 – as a solo artist, or with The Falcons. This material was issued by a variety of small labels such as Correc-Tone, Cub, Double-L and Lupine. This set presents a stellar collection of Pickett’s earliest and most obscure recordings from his early career. Soul staples like “I Found a Love,” “If You Need Me” (later covered by The Rolling Stones), and “It’s Too Late” (not to be confused with the homonymous Chuck Willis standard) were R&B hits for the singer before hehooked up with Atlantic Records. Some of the material here has been long unavailable on vinyl. Although he eventually went on to greater commercial success in the mid- and late ‘60s, all of these early gems form the building blocks of Wilson Pickett’s musical legacy.

WILSON PICKETT, vocals, plus:

Robert White (guitar), James Jamerson (bass),
Joe Hunter, Harold Battiste (piano),

Alvin “Red” Tyler (baritone sax),

among others.

Recorded in Detroit, Michigan, between 1959 and 1962.
