Mexican band leader, pianist, and composer for television and films, Juan García Esquivel (1918-2002) is recognized today as one of the foremost exponents of a sophisticated style of largely instrumental music that combines elements of lounge music and jazz with Latin flavors. His music gained fame in the late 1950s-early 1960s, and his use of unique instrumentation and sounds would pioneer a style that would come to be known as “Space Age Bachelor Pad Music”. Often referred to simply as Esquivel, he has also earned the nicknames “The King of Space Age Pop” and “The Busby Berkeley of Cocktail Music”. His distinctive and idiosyncratic orchestrations have been featured in several films, such as the Coen brothers’ The Big Lebowski (1998), which included his song “Mucha Muchacha” from Latin-Esque. This release presents a brilliant Esquivel album from the early phase of his career: "Strings Aflame" (RCA Victor LSP-1988).
