The Drifters were a key link between Fifties rhythm & blues and Sixties soul music. They epitomized the vocal group style of New York City. Theirs was the sweet but streetwise sound of R&B suffused with gospel influences, singing high-spirited songs with sunny harmonies, as well as ballads and rocking numbers. This essential release compiles 30 of The Drifters’ most emblematic and celebrated smashes, recorded by the Atlantic label between 1955 and 1962. Highlights include all-time classics like “Up on the Roof,” “There Goes My Baby,” “Lonely Winds,” “This Magic Moment,” “Save the Last Dance for Me,” and “I Count the Tears,” just to name a few. The great tunes The Drifters recorded came from a variety of sources, including the legendary songwriting teams of Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman; and Gerry Goffin and Carole King. Among the material contained in this remastered collection are the 12 tracks that constituted the group’s complete LP The Drifters’ Greatest Hits (originally issued by Atlantic in 1960, and long unavailable on any format) – a very popular album among R&B and soul aficionados of that golden era
