Nolan Strong & The Diablos were the forerunners of the Detroit R&B sound. They merged Latin, blues, and modern rhythms into a sound that would influence the mighty music machine at Motown. Strong’s vocal style was a clear precursor to that of Smokey Robinson, Phillippe Wynne, and Michael Jackson. Although Strong is not as celebrated as some of his successors, devotees of vintage doo-wop and ‘50s/’60s R&B rate him as one of the greatest singers of his day.
This collector’s edition contains 29 tracks, including a wide selection of those great songs and hard-to-find sides Nolan Strong recorded with The Diablos for the Detroit label Fortune Records, between 1954 and 1962. The set presents joyous R&B and catchy doo-wop, as well as mambos and early soul gems. Some of the material here isn’t available on other collections, nor have these recordings ever been previously compiled on one CD. An outstanding overview of Nolan Strong & The Diablos, this set is an important addition to the music collection of fans of classic R&B.
Recorded in Detroit, Michigan, 1954-1962.
