One of the factors that made the Gerry Mulligan Quartet with Chet Baker special was the absence of the piano from the rhythm section (jazz rhythm sections usually consisted of piano, bass and drums). The lack of the piano gave the bass more liberties with the harmony, and also presented the horns with more space to improvise. The highly successful group disbanded after Mulligan was busted by the police on drug charges in 1953. The relationship between Mulligan and Baker wouldn’t be the same after the trial, and Chet Baker soon decided to launch his career in solitary. Mulligan and Baker would only record one more album together, titled Reunion, in 1957 (presented of this release)
