This quintessential edition includes The Teenagers’ wonderful debut album, The Teenagers featuring Frankie Lymon, originally released by the Gee label in 1956. It featured one of the most distinctive looking LP covers of the period. On different sessions recorded between December 1955 and August 1956, the group cut the 12 takes that make up this album. The material consists of the most memorable tracks from The Teenagers’ most inspired years. Highlights include the band’s huge debut smash, “Why Do Fools Fall in Love?”, along with its B-side, the yearning ballad “Please Be Mine,” as well as the bouncy “Love Is a Clown” and the lament “Am I Fooling Myself Again,” among other classics. The LP features a number of outstanding slow numbers, but, as music critic Bruce Eder wrote, “it’s the jaunty numbers like ‘I Want You to Be My Girl’ – on which Frankie Lymon’s pubescent falsetto plays the role of trumpet, ahead of Jimmy Wright’s cooking sax break – that steal the spotlight amid this uniformity of excellence.” In addition to the original masterpiece, this WaxTime collector’s edition contains 2 bonus tracks, which were recorded by Frankie Lymon in 1957: “Portable on My Shoulder,” and “Thumb Thumb.”
