Archie Shepp, John Tchicai, and Don Cherry formed three-fifths of perhaps the most important, prolific, and seminal band of the early-'60 free jazz movement in the New York Contemporary Five. The tunes of this potent set at the Cafe Montmartre in Copenhagen, are a combination of traditional jazz foundations on which powerful harmolodic and free bop music influenced directly by Ornette Coleman was overlaid, giving the set and the music played a importance much greater than this fleeting group.

The New York Contemporary Five were the first real improvising supergroup, but didn't last long, with several members moving to the U.S. Shepp stayed in Europe and recorded several great albums. Among some of the best were his duo settings like Goin' Home, Trouble in Mind, and Looking at Bird, all of the on the also Danish label Steeplechase.
