Before the legendary bandleader/trumpeter Matthew Halsall committed to tape his sensual blend of spiritual zeal and bold, traditional-adjacent jazz — his trumpet peerlessly snaking between cheeky squall and buttery-smooth croon — you had only the superlative word of those lucky enough to catch him. 2008’s Sending My Love, promptly followed by Colour Yes the following year, drew the attention of a wider audience to his contemporary jazz maestro status. This may be a few steps from the start of his musical journey, but the greatness is already evident.
