In the early 60's Les McCann was a pioneer of "Soul Jazz". His critics called him commercial, but his music painted efficient tunes from blues to gospel to rhythm & blues. A young pianist, McCann released through the Pacific Jazz label in 1960 and toured Europe with his trio in 1961 and 1962.
Among others, he played as an opening act for Ray Charles and Count Basie. The "Live in Paris" CD gives the listener the opportunity to immerse himself in those times and relive this concert from July 61 at the legendary Chamelon Club in Paris.
McCann was very inspired that evening, kindly admonishing his audience when they whistled along to the tunes, and the mood was great. A rare document that transports the listener back in time thanks to this free-spirited and swinging pianist.
