THE KING OF THE STROLL

Chuck Willis is one of the great forgotten performers of the early rock & roll era, and this collection is a fine introduction to his sensitive vocals and well-honed writing talents. He could rock, roll, moan and stroll with equal aplomb. This best-of collection gathers a variety of the great R&B recordings he made for Okeh and Atlantic Records between 1951 and 1958, including a reworking of his signature “C.C. Rider” (an irresistible update of a classic folk-blues), the song that led to his moniker “The King of Stroll”, as well as the equally popular “Betty and Dupree”, “I Feel So Bad” (later covered by Elvis Presley, Little Milton, B.B. King and Otis Rush), and his two posthumous hits, the poignantly titled “What Am I Living For?” and “Hang Up My Rock and Roll Shoes”. Contemporary vocalists owe a big debt to Willis. This CD contains an essential collection of songs from one of the most important artists in American popular music of the 1950s.

“Graceful songs” – Greil Marcus

“Chuck Willis had perhaps the most potential to become a great Soul artist in the years to come. He had an intense and committed delivery, and even his earliest recordings reveal the human anguish that would come to characterize the best of soul music” - Pete Grendysa

“One day, around 1958, I remember hearing something that was unlike anything I'd ever heard before... The music was demanding, ‘Listen to me!’... The song was called ‘See See Rider’.” Martin Scorses ( Rollins Stone Magazine 5 STARS)
