An underrated vocalist who possessed incredible power and clarity, Lloyd Price was one of the great pioneers that transformed blues singing, and expanded rhythm & blues with a swing-band orchestration into rock & roll. Not entirely content with being a 1950s R&B star on the strength of his immortal New Orleans classic “Lawdy Miss Clawdy”, Price (also known as “Mr. Personality”, a nickname copped from one of his most popular hits) yearned for massive pop acceptance. He found it, too, with a storming rock & roll reading of the ancient blues “Stagger Lee”, followed by a string of splendid LPs for the ABC-Paramount label.
This quintessential release presents two of his finest albums: Sings the Million Sellers (1961) and The Fantastic Lloyd Price (1960). Long unavailable, both records have finally been remastered and packaged together in this very special collector’s edition, which also includes 7 bonus tracks from the same period. Most of these great songs – recorded in crystal clear stereo sound – were produced and arranged by Sid Feller and the future Motown staffer Gil Askey, who gave Price’s interpretations full-bodied support.

“Lloyd Price is definitely a most important figure in the pantheon of New Orleans music, sharing the same pedestal with Professor Longhair, Fats Domino, Dave Bartholomew and Allen Toussaint.” – Offbeat magazine
