Blues Etude + Canadiana Suite

Blues Etude was a transitional album in Oscar Peterson’s career. In the middle of making it, Ray Brown, who had been playing with him for 15 years, left the group. He would be replaced by Sam Jones, while drummer Ed Thigpen would be replaced by Louis Hayes. The previous trio, with both Brown and Thigpen, is heard on the second LP presented here, Canadiana Suite, a heartfelt homage to Peterson’s home country. Besides the contagious swing of all of the trio’s formations, one of the highlights of both albums is the pianist’s work as a composer. He penned three of the tunes on Blues Etude, and composed all of the tracks on the Canadiana Suite.
