This amazing PREVIOUSLY UNISSUED set recorded in Switzerland finds Dexter Gordon in a quartet format backed by his brilliant and usual collaborators George Cables, Rufus Reid, and Eddie Gladden. Dexter was in a very happy period after being signed by Columbia (which resulted in in the significant successes Sophisticated Giant and Manhattan Symphony). In 1978 Dexter was awarded “Musician of the Year” by Down Beat magazine, and the spectacular music on this wonderfully recorded concert clearly shows why. Gordon only seems to have recorded "On Green Dolphin Street" and Randy Weston's "Hi-Fly" on two other occasions, and these are his only versions of these two tunes by his star quartet with Cables, Reid and Gladden. But Dexter's magic is present al throughout, and his readings of tunes he played dozens of times were nonetheless always unique.
Recorded live at Hotel Mohren, Willisau. Switzerland, March 4, 1978.
