Genius early work from this legendary British jazz combo – material recorded right before the release of their classic Shades Of Blue album – which marked a huge watershed in European modern jazz! The tracks here were recorded live on the BBC, and have the group stepping out in their really unique blend of modern ideas and straighter swing – the kinds of sounds that could only have been carried off so well by Ian Carr on trumpet and Don Rendell on tenor and soprano sax – both players with deeper roots in British jazz, but really ready to try something new!

The rest of the group here features Colin Purbrook on piano, Dave Green on bass, and Trevor Tompkins on drums – and the set's overflowing with great original numbers that bristle with fantastic interplay between the horns.
