A gem of a live performance from Aretha Franklin – recorded at the NATRA convention in Philly in 1972, and issued here for the first time ever!

The setting is a bit more intimate than the usual Franklin gig of the time, and the feel is a bit more mature as well – showing that new level of sophistication that Aretha was hitting in her studio sets for Atlantic at the time, undercurrents of jazz mixed in with the soul – in ways that really update and change over some of the more familiar tunes in the performance.

The backing group feels somewhat large, but has more than enough grit to keep things going – and the sound quality is surprisingly great, considering that these tapes sat up on a shelf in the Atlantic vaults for over 30 years.
