A great precursor to the legendary album Tanglewood 63 – one of the touchstones of British jazz at the start of the 70s, and a masterpiece from trombonist/arranger Mike Gibbs!
The tracks here are live studio takes on some of the tunes that appeared on the set, plus other material too – all crafted with Gibbs' stunning sense of color and tone, as he brings together free-thinking acoustic jazz musicians with a few slight electric touches from Chris Spedding on guitar, Mick Pyne on organ, and Roy Babbington on organ – players who really help state the fact that the music is new and different, but never in a more familiar jazz-rock way!
The horn players are excellent too – and in addition to Gibbs on trombone, the set features work from Henry Lowther and Harry Beckett on trumpets, Chris Pyne and Malcolm Griffiths on trombones, and Alan Skidmore, Stan Sulzman, Tony Roberts, and Jim Phillip on reeds. Drums are by John Marshall on most tracks, and Frank Ricotti adds in a lot of cool percussion – including some mighty nice vibes.
