The Pacific Coast: John Lewis’s outstanding Los Angeles, February 10, 1956 recording "Grand Encounter", boasting a lineup of Jim Hall, Bill Perkins, Percy Heath, and Chico Hamilton as well as the inimitable arrangements of John Lewis.

The Atlantic Coast: This session features a legendary reunion between Lewis, Sonny Stitt and Dizzy Gillespie, who performed together in the latter musician’s celebrated 1940s big band. Recorded in New York on January 12, 1956, "The Modern Jazz Sextet" also includes the participation of Skeeter Best, Percy Heath and Charlie Persip as well as original compositions by Gillespie and Lewis’s arrangements.
