Born on October 25, 1937, Brazilian composer, record producer, guitarist, vocalist, and pioneer of bossa nova Roberto Menescal is best known for his song “O Barquinho” (“Little Boat”), as well as for his various works with Carlos Lyra, Nara Leão, Wanda Sá, and Ale Vanzella, among many others.
In 1957, Menescal worked as a sideman for Sylvia Telles in Brazil. A year later he started a guitar school with Carlos Lyra in Copacabana (Rio), where his students included Nara Leão and his sister Danuza Leão. He formed one of the earliest bossa nova bands with Bebeto, Henrique, João Mário, and Luís Carlos Vinhas, and spread the genre through performances and concerts in the late 1950s and early 1960s.
Alaíde Costa recorded Menescal’s song “Jura de Pombo” in 1959, and the more famous “O Barquinho” was taped the next year by Maysa, Paulinho Nogueira, and Pery Ribeiro. Such was the success of the latter song that Menescal would sing it at Carnegie Hall in 1962 when he attended the Bossa Nova Festival with Carlos Lyra and Antônio Carlos Jobim. During the middle to late 1960s Menescal acted as arranger and record producer for PolyGram, producing music for Maria Bethânia, Gal Costa, Gilberto Gil, Jorge Ben, and Caetano Veloso.
This LP finds him playing with his own band a variety of songs, both composed by Menescal himself and taken from various other sources. It includes a version of his aforementioned hit, “O Barquinho”.
