One of the most unique soundtracks of the blacksploitation generation – but maybe that's also because the film Lord Shango was also somewhat different than most – a hipper, more creative movie that took on a number of themes, which are all echoed by Howard Roberts in his music!
This Howard Roberts isn't the famous LA guitar jazz musician – but instead a black arranger best known for 60s choral records that usually had a blend of easy listening and soul – which is quite a difference from the funky vibe of this record – a set that mixes in all sorts of vocal and percussive elements with more familiar electric funk – still with Roberts' chorus in the mix, but often with a lead female singer singing soul-based lyrics! The whole thing's wonderful – as much a soul record as a soundtrack
