Originally released on the Todamerica label in 1957, ‘Obaluayê’ was one of only two records released by the mysterious Orquestra Afro-Brasileira. A highly influential fusion of traditional Brazilian and West African percussion with Western big band brass and woodwind, this rare album has had its famous acolytes, perhaps most notably Beastie Boys’ producer Mario Caldato Jr., who has recorded a third Orquestra album.
